The year 2023 was unfavorable for Kazakhstan's grain producers, as the harvest of wheat was small and of low quality. This factor will influence the formation of the harvest in 2024. However, the gross wheat harvest may be 12% higher than in 2023, said the director of APK-Inform Asia Elena Cherednichenko during the international conference Chinese Grains&Oils Congress in Shanghai.

She specified that according to the forecasts of APK-Inform, the wheat harvest in Kazakhstan in the current year will amount to about 12.53 mln tonnes (against 11.14 mln tonnes in 2023).

"The low quality of the wheat produced in 2023 creates high risks for the quality of seeds. This, in turn, may lead to lower yields. Still, we expect that the situation will not be as bad as in the current season," noted Ms. Cherednychenko.

APK-Inform does not expect any significant changes in other items of the grain balance. The only exception may be the reduction of imports amid the increased trade with Russia (by about 41% in wheat).

Also, according to the speaker, in the current season it is possible to increase re-export of seed material from Kazakhstan to Russia, which is subject to import quotas.
